Youth supporting each other for social advancement!
Manuel Maya was an engineer and advocate for women and children in the STEM world! While he may have passed, his light lives on in the young women he has inspired and supported. It is in his honor that this foundation was started and renamed. To continue to be a safe, fun place for children to experience math and STEM fundamentals!
Higher quality of life through embracing math!
Make math fun by removing the fear of math so children can continue to STEM careers by being successful in math.
The mission of the Maya MathFUNdation is to engage with school children, Kindergarten through 6th grade (primary/elementary age), in an afterschool setting, and through games, other low-cost tools, and personal interaction by talented high-school age volunteers, make doing mathematics FUN and lower the anxiety associated with math. The purpose of this is to help children want to continue with and excel at math, the foundation of good-paying STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) careers, and prepare them to be math-capable citizens and thereby experience a higher quality of life.
The initial area of operations and the headquarters for the Maya MathFUNdation is San Antonio, Texas. The organization is named after Juan Manuel Maya, an electrical engineer and math tutor who, through excelling at math, raised himself up and out of low socio-economic status in Mexico and put his three children through private schools and American universities. He always encouraged his children to do well at math, telling them, “If you can do math, you can do anything.” The Maya MathFUNdation seeks to get at the root cause of the underrepresentation of minorities in STEM fields by reducing anxiety related to math at a young age, helping set the stage for success in math, which is the foundation for success in STEM as well as other aspects of an educated citizenry.
To keep the Maya MathFUNdation’s costs low, plus provide volunteer math tutors as close in age as possible to our target audience, we will leverage students in San Antonio schools who need service hours for their school graduation requirements. This is a win-win scenario for the Maya MathFUNdation. The ideal volunteer is a high school junior or senior with a driver’s license, a vehicle, and a desire to serve younger students who need the encouragement and excitement the Maya MathFUNdation brings to math.
Our performance-based metric of achieving our mission is that at least 85% of students who fully participate in the Maya MathFUNdation afterschool program will maintain or increase their grades in math by the end of the academic year.
Alessandra Simpson started the MathFUNdation as a small volunteer group with a big vision and managed by high school students. It was renamed Maya Math Foundation in honor of my grandfather, who loved math. Over the years, we plan to grow into more schools and impact our community by helping underrepresented children achieve their dream of pursuing a STEM Career.
At Maya-MathFUNdation, we foster a culture of creativity, collaboration, and excellence. We believe in helping children achieve their full potential. We also value diversity and inclusivity.
We are dedicated to making a positive impact on our community. We are committed to using our math skills to create a better future for all.
